Coaching
British Canoeing Offers Three Levels Of Paddlesport Coaching Qualifications All Of Which Are Endorsed By The United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC)
Level 1 Certificate
Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport is the first step on the paddlesport coaching pathway, and the entry point for most paddlesport coaches.
This qualification develops the foundation coaching skills that underpin coaching practice. Specifically, it introduces the fundamentals of safe, ethical and effective paddlesport coaching and is available as a bank-based or a boat-based qualification. The qualification is not discipline specific and is suitable for coaches who work with paddlers from any of the competitive and recreational paddlesport disciplines.
The course prepares coaches, for running taster sessions, coaching introductory core skills, coaching paddlers in a variety of craft and coaching in sheltered and very sheltered water conditions, normally with the support of a more qualified coach.
Level 2 Certificate
Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport introduces the skills and coaching behaviours required for developing performance through progressive coaching.
Level 2 coaches are trained and assessed to work independently in the planning, delivery and review of progressive and developmental sessions for their paddlers.
The qualification is suitable for coaches wishing to work with paddlers from any paddlesport discipline, and is available as either a bank-based or a boat-based award, and is certificated as either a single discipline (canoe or kayak) or dual discipline (canoe and kayak).
Level 3 Certificate
Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport develops on the progressive coaching skills gained at Level 2 and trains the coach to plan, deliver, and review long term coaching programmes.
The Level 3 course is aimed at coaches working predominantly with paddlers in their intermediate years of paddling activity, i.e. the Train to Train, Train to Perform and Recreational Phases.
The qualification is discipline specific and currently available in Open Canoe, White Water Kayak, Sea, Surf, Slalom, Sprint Racing and Marathon Racing. Candidates can also choose to undertake the qualification as either a bank-based or a boat-based coach.
